Marketing initiatives etc. Assoc. Rules Letter to HVVA Labeling conflict Committee
Q Why is another association needed?
A To serve specific, additional and different needs.
Q What are those needs?
A To focus on promotion and marketing of Pokolbin and to provide a common purpose for the area.
Q Should I remain a member of the HVVA or other industry organisations?
A We do not intend to persuade anyone to cease their membership of the HVVA or any other organisation. Each vigneron needs to decide individually the benefits derived by membership of any organisation.
Q Why does Pokolbin need promotion?
A Because other localities in the Hunter Valley are projecting strong profiles which could leave Pokolbin behind.
Q Why use the name Pokolbin and not Hunter Valley?
A Hunter Valley is widely known and we plan to continue to use it but it covers an area from the coast between Lake Macquarie and Nelson Bay out to the Merriwa and Scone area. Pokolbin defines the specific area that most wine tourists think of as being the major wine making area and in conjunction with Hunter Valley provides a good 'brand' to promote.
Q How was the name Pokolbin selected?
A Firstly the Hunter Wine Country PID is the area that this association has chosen to cover because it is discrete and homogeneous. Most of that area is known as Pokolbin by the Geographical Names Board. The majority of vignerons independently surveyed selected the name Pokolbin as their preference.
Q What other issues does the association feel are important?
A The resolution of the issue of Australian Geographical Indications for this area. The AWBC has received submissions for sub-regions, this association supports the submission for a single sub-region.
Q What are the Geographical Indications in place?
A The Zone is Hunter Valley, which means Hunter Valley is not available for our sub-region area. The Region is Hunter. The only currently defined sub-region is Broke Fordwich.
Q Could we change the Zone and Region names?
A No, now gazetted and registered by International agreements we are stuck with them.
Q What single sub-region name does the association favour?
A Whatever name the majority of vignerons support, probably Pokolbin or Pokolbin Rothbury.
Q How would those names be used?
A As Pokolbin, Hunter Valley or Pokolbin Rothbury, Hunter Valley.
Q Is wine style or quality a factor in setting up a GI sub-region?
A No. The AWBC have confirmed that these are not factors to be considered. Also the AAT discounted these criteria in the Coonawarra decision.
Q Do wine label regulations apply to domestic wine sales?
A Yes. You also need to be careful about including your address on yhe label, you may also need a disclaimer about the grape source. Go to Labeling conflict
